If one manages to brave the hoards of young Bank of America professionals, freshly graduated twenty-somethings hoping to impress their dates, you can put your name on the waiting list. I have nothing against a restaurant that’s not on Open Table, or that doesn’t take reservations at all for that matter, but the food better be good. Good Food on Montford is well worth the wait.
Good Food is self-described as a tapas-style restaurant with a modern take on classic southern American cuisine; however, the dishes contain primarily Asian and European influences. To start, I recommend trying the crispy quail lettuce wrap with marinated cucumbers, Asian pears and chilies. The sweet and savory accents play off each other, creating a light, yet richly flavorful prevue.
The arugula salad is also a great starter. With apples, spiced pecans, golden raisins, goat cheese and apple butter, this modern take on the traditional salad also incorporates sweet and savory zests into a simple, clean dish.
Moving on to the heavier dishes, the garganelli is rich Italian pasta with sausage, toasted garlic and tomato. The sweetness of the garlic and tomatoes pairs perfectly with the spiciness of the Italian sausage, producing rich flavors that massage one’s palate.
My favorite dish is the steamed bun with pork belly. This dish is similar to Momofuku’s famous steamed bun; however, Good Food’s pork belly is rubbed with five spices and incorporates hoisin and pickled vegetables, creating a complex combination of opulent flavors. I also recommend ordering the pomme frites for a side, as the favors meld well with the pork. It is worth noting that Good Food offers numerous beers on tap and a large selection of wine to accompany the flavors of the dishes.
Head chef Bruce Moffett has created a truly excellent menu, encompassing flavors and preparations from around the world. The small plate style creates an intimate dining experience to be shared with friends and loved ones. Good Food on Montford is an essential stop for Charlotteans and traveling foodies alike.
